One Solution: Roll Your Own Blackout!

The "California Energy Crisis" may be a political illusion conjured by the dark forces of Big Oil, Coal, and Nuclear, but the "rolling blackouts" that have cursed California are very real, costly, and for many, painful and life-threatening. They are evidence of raw, inhuman corporate arrogance. Even if you aren't mad as hell and won't stand any more, in solidarity with Californians and the Renewably Inclined Everywhere, join us in this important action:

ROLL YOUR OWN BLACKOUT
THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
JUNE 21, 2001 THURSDAY EVENING
7-10pm worldwide, all time zones

ENLIST YOUR FRIENDS -- HAVE A PARTY!

Well, it's over, at least for this year. Those who rolled their own blackouts reported a lovely evening in touch with the natural rhythms of their lives and the solstice. We'd be happy to hear from anyone who participated -- email webteam@chelseagreen.com -- and as for next year: let's do it again!

In protest of George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (this will roll it across the planet).

It's a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle to the sungod, kiss and tell, make love, tell ghost stories, do something instead of watching television, have fun in the dark. [go out and see the stars]

Please circulate this idea as widely as possible, to your government representatives and environmental contacts. Let them know we want global education, participation and funding in conservation, efficiency and alternative fuel efforts -- and an end to over-exploitation and misuse of the earth's resources.
